I think there is a confusing outcome of the following statement at the conclusion
... due to lack of WSDL support for Perl ...
which not true. Of course you can use Perl for SOAP related applications in any aspects for over three years; we had even to implement SOAP proxies in our company in pure Perl since other technologies like PHP and ColdFusion were not fully compatible with Apache Axis!

You can create SOAP applications both on the server-side or client-side and furthermore create stub code from a WSDL file.

I agree the whole SOAP stuff might be a bit complex in general despite the chosen language. It looks like it was a unfair disadvantage for the Perl team since they didn't know it before whereas Java people tend to use SOAP services excessively for any task, independent of the fact a lean solution had been a better advice in some cases.

Have a lot of fun.

Hi Lutz,

Good job, well done. I think this is a very interesting topic. However, it still seems to me more academical, rather than a practical result. The productivity of the outcome also comprises the frameworks selected for developing. If, for example, the PHP frameworks used are more appropriate for the task than the selected Java frameworks, it is easier to develop a suitable solution. Maybe things were different when using Struts? And if so, was it a mistake by the developers to choose it, or is it the market situation that you get better suitable PHP frameworks than Java frameworks?
Also of interest would be the average code quality around for the given platforms, rather than the best possible solutions with each platform. Although your developers don't count themselves to be the very topnotch programmers, they're probably better than what's available on the market (although I'd bet around 80% of the programmers consider themselves to be among the 20% best...). But I admit this is close to impossible to assess.
Anyway, I think this competition is a good idea, and am looking forward to your future results.

Oh, yes, sure. Thanks for the reminder.
I have now updated the requirements document accordingly.

In the report I read that there are some errors in the requirements document. Will you update the document or comment the appropriate blog entry. Thus someone using those requirements later will have all needed information.

Thanks

Thomas
